The Shoe Project: Standing Strong

March 27, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$17 – $20

The Shoe Project returns to the High Performance Rodeo!

Ten women, from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, India, Iran, Syria, Mexico, China, Nigeria, and the Philippines will share their stories of immigration and adaptation to Canada – through a pair of shoes.

This performance is a culmination of a ten-week workshop cycle where the women were instructed in writing by authors Barb Howard and Kirti Bhadresa, and voice-coached by Denise Clarke.

Shoes accompany us on all our journeys. They say who we are, where we came from and where we are going. Writing and performing their shoe memoirs allows members to be heard in the Canadian mainstream. These powerful stories are bridges carrying us all to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Canadian.

The Shoe Project was created by novelist Katherine Govier and incubated at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto.

“I’m blown away. Those women are amazing, their stories bold and brave and filled with humour, love, and all the travails of making their journeys here. I loved the various shoes, the boots, the “slippers”. What an outstanding project!” —Catherine Mitchell, publisher
