SUMMARY:Wordfest Presents Robert Macfarlane
DESCRIPTION:This is the show Wordfest has been waiting all year to announce. Join us for an exclusive opportunity to see British writer\, naturalist\, and Nobel Prize contender Robert Macfarlane. He’s coming to Calgary as part of his North American tour to celebrate Is a River Alive?\, which is not just Macfarlane’s latest literary masterpiece\, but a rallying cry and a catalyst for change. It is a book that will open hearts\, spark debates and challenge perspectives. A clarion call to re-centre rivers in our stories\, law and politics\, it invites us to radically re-imagine not only rivers but life itself. \nAt the heart of this vital\, beautiful book is the recognition that our fate flows with that of rivers—and always has. No one understands that better than Albertans\, and we are thrilled to have Canadian writer and naturalist Kevin Van Tighem hosting the conversation\, which will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing fuelled by Shelf Life books. You can pre-order your copy of Is a River Alive?\, as well as Macfarlane’s extensive back list (which includes the international publishing phenomenon The Lost Words)\, here. \n“I’ve poured all I have into it. My notebooks were always thirsty; I filled over 20 of them while on fieldwork\,” Macfarlane says of his new book. “It’s become the most political\, personal & (possibly) poetic book I’ve written.” \nYou won’t want to miss this incredible evening\, and we are grateful to Penguin Random House Canada for making it possible.

It’s our way of thanking writers\, readers\, and community builders for helping to spark our thriving literary scene. Join us for The Way We… Calgary’d\, featuring Ali Bryan\, Marcello Di Cintio\, Will Ferguson\, Cheryl Foggo\, Richard Harrison\, Joshua Whitehead\, and Teresa Wong\, with a special performance by Tom Phillips. \nCome early to check out our special Anniversary Exhibit\, featuring posters\, T-shirts\, ephemera\, and more examples of Wordfest’s creativity over the decades. There will be a special photo opportunity to capture the glam and the glitter\, with libations by Dandy Brewing Co. Owl’s Nest Books will be on site with a curated selection of Calgary-authored books. And\, for the very first time\, Wordfest will be selling signed\, first-edition copies from its archive (with proceeds going to Wordfest Youth). SUMMARY:The Far West
DESCRIPTION:New works by Southern Alberta composers Jesse Plessis and Sonny-Ray Day Rider are featured alongside a reprise of Zachary Wadsworth’s “The Far West.” Premiered by Luminous Voices in 2014\, “The Far West” won the National Choral Award for “Outstanding Choral Composition” from Choral Canada in 2016. \nTim Dlugos texts for “The Far West” inspire rich and powerful music from Wadsworth\, who describes them as charting “a trajectory from disease and darkness to reconciliation and light… The ending is not a happy one\, but it’s a hopeful one.” \nTim Dlugos died of AIDS on December 3\, 1990\, at the age of 40. He had been diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1987 and had spent his final three years of life studying to become a priest at the Yale Divinity School\, volunteering as a hospital chaplain-in-training\, and writing poetry. His final poems document a dark time: a time of weekly funerals for lost friends and a time of progressing personal illness. \nSpecial Guests:\nLawrence Wiliford\, tenor\nLuminous String Ensemble

SUMMARY:Beatlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to your city.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!
