SUMMARY:The Far West
DESCRIPTION:New works by Southern Alberta composers Jesse Plessis and Sonny-Ray Day Rider are featured alongside a reprise of Zachary Wadsworth’s “The Far West.” Premiered by Luminous Voices in 2014\, “The Far West” won the National Choral Award for “Outstanding Choral Composition” from Choral Canada in 2016. \nTim Dlugos texts for “The Far West” inspire rich and powerful music from Wadsworth\, who describes them as charting “a trajectory from disease and darkness to reconciliation and light… The ending is not a happy one\, but it’s a hopeful one.” \nTim Dlugos died of AIDS on December 3\, 1990\, at the age of 40. He had been diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1987 and had spent his final three years of life studying to become a priest at the Yale Divinity School\, volunteering as a hospital chaplain-in-training\, and writing poetry. His final poems document a dark time: a time of weekly funerals for lost friends and a time of progressing personal illness. \nSpecial Guests:\nLawrence Wiliford\, tenor\nLuminous String Ensemble

DESCRIPTION:We invite the community to participate in the 16th annual Walk for Reconciliation this National Indigenous Peoples Day. The walk starts at Harry Hays Building (220 4 Ave SE) and concludes at The Confluence (750 9th Ave SE).  \nThe walk begins at 9 am at the Harry Hays Building (220 4 Ave SE) and ends at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (750 9 Ave SE). Around 10 am\, a free community meal will be available for the first 500 participants\, catered by Spolumbo’s Deli\, followed by an outdoor gathering with speeches and performances. \nParticipants are welcome to bring blankets or portable chairs to sit on during the outdoor program. This event goes on rain or shine\, so be sure to come prepared for the weather.

DESCRIPTION:Come on out for a cross-organization collaborative all-ages sober variety show on Sunday\, July 27th from 1:00 to 5:00 at Contemporary Calgary with time to mingle before and after! \nTickets available now: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/big-queer-variety-show-tickets-1415897560719 \nJoin our Emcees\, Alyjah Ermine and Oliver Twirl\, for a fun afternoon of queer joy and creativity as a whole bevvy of talent crosses the stage! There will be drag performances by El Rey del Sol\, Alina Montenegro\, Dayna Hart\, Sir Velvet\, Roy GBP & Oliver Twirl\, poetry readings by Cece Chow and Alyjah Ermine\, hip hop from Kindé\, and classical and Bengali dance performances by Kajal and Ratul! \nTickets:\nWe are offering pay-what-you-are-able tickets and splitting 100% of the ticket sales between Black Pride YYC\, Colores Del Alma\, and Rang De Pride to help support them in all the offerings they have coming up in the calendar. \nOur sponsor:\nThank you to the Community-Based Research Centre for providing funding so we can pay $100 honorariums to all performers. Tips will also be split amongst all performers to ensure everyone is paid for their labour. \nAccessibility:\nTo make this event safe as possible to attend for as many of our 2SLGBTQIA+ community members\, we ask that folks do a Covid test within 24 hours of attending and wear masks when not eating. Details are coming\, but there will be gluten free and vegan options courtesy of the Pansy Club\, as well as Jamaican patties from Simply Caribbean. \nContemporary Calgary has a paid parking lot and is right by the c-train downtown. They have wheelchair accessible washrooms on the main floor and the floor of the Heather Edwards theatre. There are multi-stall gendered washrooms on all floors as well.
