Event Series Event Series: LGBTQ 101

October 28, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Back by popular demand, it’s LGBTQ 101: History, Terminology, and Tools for Allyship!

This workshop endeavours to create bridges of understanding about the LGBTQ community. This includes a deep dive into the language developed and used by the community surrounding identity and self-expression, expands on the context of the historical LGBTQ rights movement and how it impacts us today, and tracks how these developments continue to shape the world that we live in.

This session will also explore the many ways to engage in effective allyship, both in a personal and professional context. and will leave participants with practical tools to help develop new relationships with the gender and sexually diverse community.

This session is open to anyone who is looking to create a deeper understanding of how they can support coworkers, family members and neighbours as we create a more empathetic and connected world.

Training delivered by Calgary Queer Arts Society’s OutReels Allyship Education & Training Program: Since 2009, OutReels has delivered over 500 diversity education workshops for thousands of Albertans, using film, story and lived experience as a vehicle for learning, discussion and empathy.

Whether you’d like to host a workshop or screening for your office, student group or community organization, OutReels will come to you (virtually, for now!) to facilitate a discussion on a topic of your choice. Their workshops, and the option to pair it with a screening from their library of available films, will spark remarkable dialogue that stimulates, inspires, and fosters compassion through understanding.

Registration Information:
1. RSVP directly through Demio, our virtual webinar platform:
2. An email reminder will be sent out to you with further information about the webinar
3. Save the date in your calendar!

This workshop is part of an online Learning Series presented by Calgary Pride, with support from the Calgary Queer Arts Society and the Canadian Red Cross. We are offering a variety of free online workshops in partnership with individual presenters and community organizations, geared toward effective allyship and the many intersections of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we at Calgary Pride honour and acknowledge Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Iyarhe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that the territory we work and live upon is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the Northwest Métis homeland.

We thank these communities for their stewardship of the land we collectively inhabit today.
